Île Notre-Dame, Montréal, Québec, Canada
Montréal Casino & Hotel
Two Expo 67 pavilions on an island, joined into one building with a faceted upper hall
What you face
The upper levels open into a tall faceted volume, and the angled glazing tilts the river and the skyline as you look through it. Floors step around the void rather than across it, so people on several levels stay in sight at once. Restaurants sit against the outer wall.
Why it is like that
The structure began as national pavilions for Expo 67, designed to be seen from every side on an island site. Conversion kept the sloped envelope and the central open volume, then threaded new floors around it. The island position is also the reason the approach comes over a bridge.
Worth knowing The site is on Île Notre-Dame and reached by bridge, so plan the approach first.

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Fallsview Casino Resort
A resort built into the slope above Niagara, with the gorge visible along one whole side
What you face
Public levels run along the escarpment edge, so the wall facing you is glass and the drop into the gorge begins a short distance beyond it. Water noise does not reach inside, though mist shows on the glass. The theatre foyer and the restaurants share that same alignment.
Why it is like that
The site falls sharply, so the building is cut into the slope and entered on more than one level. Putting the long face along the rim gives every public room the same orientation without stacking them. The back of the plan holds parking and services that the slope conceals.
Worth knowing Mist freezes on walkways near the rim in winter, so footwear matters.

Richmond, British Columbia, Canada
River Rock Casino Resort
A waterfront resort beside the Fraser at Richmond, with its own moorage along the channel
What you face
Ground drops to the water within sight of the entrance, and the marina sits directly below the terrace. Boats and flat delta landscape make up most of what you see from there. Inside, the show theatre and the restaurants are grouped away from the glass, on the landward side.
Why it is like that
Richmond stands on delta land, so the whole site is low and level and the river edge is the only feature with any depth. Building against the channel allowed a moorage and a float-plane connection. Services and the hall went inland, where daylight would have been of no use.
Worth knowing The Canada Line station is next door, which is the simplest way in from Vancouver.

Rama, Ontario, Canada
Casino Rama Resort
A resort on Chippewas of Rama First Nation land near Lake Couchiching, kept low against the ground
What you face
The building stays close to the ground, so what stands in front of you on arrival is tree line rather than tower. Interiors use timber and stone surfaces at the scale of the entrance halls. The concert hall sits inside that same low mass and is entered from the same level.
Why it is like that
The land is held by the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and the site is open, which allowed a wide plan instead of a tall one. Spreading the programme sideways keeps hall, restaurants and spa on one floor. Lake and woodland set the height the building answers to.
Worth knowing It is a drive out from Orillia, and the surrounding roads are rural and unlit.
